Crafter’s Corner – Lip Balm

Who can resist a great lip balm? Especially one you get to customize to your liking! No more loving the flavor but hating the color or vice versa, now you get to love both! In our Crafter’s Corner we offer a lip balm kit where you get to choose everything you want, down to which kind of lip balm base you want. Base, color, flavor and packaging is completely up to you!

1

In this kit we offer 3 different lip balm bases; basic, glossy, & vegan. Our basic base consists of coconut oil, beeswax, sweet almond oil, & avocado oil. Our glossy base ingredients are beeswax, shea butter, & castor oil. And last but not least we offer a vegan option as well, that has coconut oil, candelilla wax, sweet almond oil, & avocado oil.

We also offer a 4 tube kit for $10 or an 8 tube kit for $15. You get to choose from these 3 bases in either a 4 tube or 8 tube kit. The fun thing about the 8 tube kit is you can split it up and make two different batches! This means you can make one batch pink and smell like vanilla and your other batch could be red and smell like acai berry!

2 3

After you choose which base you’d like to use, you then have a few more decisions to make. We have 8 different micas and oxides to choose from if you want to add color. You can make it light enough to be a tint, or you can make it dark enough to be a lip stick.

4

Next, you get to choose which flavor oil you’d like to use. There are 8 different flavor oils you get to choose from, as well as Peppermint 2nd Essential oil and Start Anise Essential Oil. These essential oils are considered lip safe and can go in lip balm.

5

Now that you have chosen your base, color and flavor oil you get to choose your packaging! We offer clear lip pots or clear lip balm tubes. We have a variety of different lip balm packaging that you can buy separately if you’d prefer!

7

Now you have picked out everything you need, now its time to make lip balm!

6
Scoop out the lip balm base in the ceramic dish provided for you. Put it in the microwave for 1 minute, if it is not all the way melted put back in for 30 seconds at a time. Be sure not to overheat as this will crystallize the butter in the balm.
8
This is what your lip balm should look like once taken out of the microwave.
9Now you can add the flavor oil. For every 4 tubes, add 1 mL flavor oil. Mix in well.
10
After the flavor oil is added, now is the time you can add color if desired. Add 4 mini scoops of color for a light tint to the lips. You can add more if you’d like it darker.

If for any reason your lip balm starts solidifying while you are adding your goodies pop it back in the microwave for 15 seconds until it is liquid again.

11
Pour your lip balm into your tubes or lip pots and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Once solidified, enjoy!

Crafter’s Corner – Nail Polish

We have lots of projects to choose from in the Crafter’s Corner, but one of our personal favorites is Nail Polish! With summer just around the corner it’s time to prep those fingers and toes for some fun in the sun!

1

We portion out Bramble Berry’s suspending nail polish base into our large nail polish bottles. To help with the mixing process, we also put 2 tiny mixing balls into the bottles.

2

We love the suspending nail polish base because your color and glitter won’t sink to the bottom of your bottle. Plus it’s 3-free, meaning it does not contain formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP. This makes it safer than your average nail polish, especially for the nail biters.

When deciding to make nail polish in our Crafter’s Corner, there are two options: 2 bottles for $10, or 5 bottles for $20.

3

You get to choose from 10 of our beautiful micas that are easy to mix to create your own colors. Plus, there are 4 fantastic glitters from which to choose!

54

As an added bonus we have 8 fragrance oils available so that your polish has an extra flare. It’s a fun addition that lasts for days after your polish has been applied.

9

The combinations are endless and fun for all ages!

6
When adding color, add no more then 10 mini scoops of color. If you add glitter, add only 3 mini scoops. Then shake!
7After you have added your color, add 10 drops of fragrance oil to the polish bottle. Tighten lid and shake again!

Recently Otion participated in a Wine Walk put on by the Downtown Bellingham Partnership. Not only did we get to show off our new floors, we were able to utilize our Crafter’s Corner space for the event. We were paired up with Tulip Valley Vineyard & Orchard. They’re located just south of us in Mount Vernon.

1

We made special lotions and candles, and had little morsels for the ticket holders to munch on. Plus, we made sure to have Crafter’s Corner projects on display because who can resist making homemade soaps, lip balm, nail polish, bath bombs and sugar scrubs? It was fun seeing all of the new faces and even some of our regular customers came to the event.

2

3 4

The event completely sold out, & with only 11 venues participating, downtown Bellingham was alive with joyful people!

Each ticket holder was given 13 tasting tickets. There were 13 wineries, but each winery brought 2 choices to try. This made it easy to appeal to everyone’s palette.

5

Let’s just say it was a nice change of pace for our little store and we can’t wait to participate again next year!

Don’t forget to hurry in and get 15% off all Crafter’s Corner projects for the month of May!

Pina Colada Lip Balm

1

♫ If you like Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain… ♫
This week we have a delightfully yummy lip balm tutorial! The best part is, it’s zero calories!
I’m not sure about you, but this tutorial has two of my favorite things: lip balm and the smell of a Pina Colada! Read on to find out how to make this lovely lip balm!

What You’ll Need:

1 oz Lip Balm Base
.5 mL Pineapple Flavor Oil
.5 mL Coconut Flavor Oil
3 mini scoops Light Gold Mica
2 mini scoops Stevia
4 Lip Balm Tubes
Droppers
Mini Scoops
Microwaveable Container

You can also make the lip balm from scratch. Here is our go-to recipe:
0.6 oz Beeswax
0.6 oz Castor Oil
1.3 oz Shea Butter
0.1 oz Flavor Oil
*This will make you approximately 10 lip balms.*

2

____________________

1. Scoop out 1 oz Lip Balm Base into a microwaveable safe container. Put in the microwave on 30 second bursts until fully melted. Once your base is melted add .5 mL Pineapple Flavor Oil as well as .5 mL Coconut Flavor Oil. Mix well.

3

2. Once your flavor oils are added, add 3 mini scoops of Light Gold Mica. If you want you can always add more. Color is very personal! After you have added the color, scoop in 2 mini scoops of Stevia. (Stevia is a natural sweetener.)

4

3. After everything is added to the lip balm base you can now pour the lip balm into the tubes.
If at any point the lip balm starts to harden in your container, put it back in the microwave on 15 second bursts. This helps to insure that the butter in the lip balm won’t crystallize. Crystallizing can happen when you heat the lip balm too quickly. Your end result will feel more like a lip scrub then a smooth lip balm.

5

And there you have it!

We bet this will become one of your new favorite lip balms!

Coal in Your Stocking

stocking-stuffer-certified

This is the beginning of our Stocking Stuffer Certified tutorials! These are small, perfect gift ideas for any occasion.

Today we embraced a gift for someone who may not be on the nice list! However, instead of filling their stocking with coal, you can give them something a little bit different. Coal-themed lip balm! We’ve created a fun black lip balm that uses Star Anise Essential Oil (it smells just like black licorice) as well as Luster Black Mica. It’s a great lip balm with a twist for the naughty. Don’t fret: the black won’t color your lips!

What You’ll Need:

2 oz Lip Balm Base
4 mini scoops Luster Black Mica
2 mL Star Anise Essential Oil
8 Lip Balm Tubes
Droppers
Mini Scoops
Microwaveable Safe Dish

1

____________________

1. Using a spoon, scoop out half of the lip balm base into a heat-safe container. Microwave on 30 second bursts until completely melted.

2

2. Once your lip balm base is completely melted down, add 2 mL of Star Anise essential oil. Once incorporated, add 4 mini scoops of Luster Black Mica. Don’t worry, your lips won’t turn black (unless you add more than 4 mini scoops)! Stir well. If your lip balm base starts solidifying, you can pop it back into the microwave for 15 seconds.

3

3. Now you are ready to pour the lip balm into tubes! Carefully pour to the top of the lip balm tube. Let them sit out for about 15 minutes before capping them. And there you have it, a perfectly delicious lip balm, and some coal for your stocking!
Well, hopefully not YOUR stocking 😉

5

If you would rather make your lip balm completely from scratch here is our go-to recipe:

0.5 oz Beeswax
0.5 oz Castor Oil
1 oz Shea Butter
2.5 mL Flavor Oil
This makes approximatley 10-12 lip balm tubes.
